We feed our gilas dead prey; for convenience and to prevent accidental bites from prey. Our standard diet consist of fuzzies/hopper/sm adult mice, rat pups, and young quail (and the occasional quail egg). Vitamin supplementation is also included periodically. Gilas have SLOW metabolisms so owners need to resist the urge to overfeed....2-3 appropriately sized prey every 10-14 days is plenty (and if it appears that the lizard is getting fat, then you need to cut back a bit).
:I am facinated by Gila monsters and I was looking at a website today and it said to feed captive Gila's dead rodents. I was wondering why they say dead and do you feed yours live or dead?
