What you are referring to is called rectal prolapse. The distal part of the rectum and cloaca gets turned inside out like a sock and protrudes through the cloaca. It then gets more swollen and cannot get back in. The fragile lining may then dehydrate, gets injured if not replaced rapidly. Many will do well if treated appropriately but it is potentially life threatening. It is not specific to GTP and can happen in almost any reptile. the exact cause of prolapse is still unclear. Dehydration, constipation , parasites and more generalized diseases causing weakness are probably the major determinants. (other species may have other causes). IMO chronic, mild dehydration and constipation that ensue is the number one culprit, explaining why GTP seems to be at risk compared to other species...
