Good eye! Yes indeed. That is why my snake's name IS Tantilla. But Tantilla has a vivid orange belly, and some of the Sonoran Ground snakes around here, especially when juvenile, have a black head just like the Tantilla. That picture is a year old, and since then the black of the head has faded markedly, and the back is beginning to take on the common orange stripe on the back. There was a debate some time ago on the field collecting forum, and it was finally decided that he was indeed a Sonoran Ground Snake. I didn't believe at first, but close examination has proved it to be true. I would love to have a little REAL tantilla, but the ground snakes are fun.
