:"But Tantilla has a vivid orange belly."
:So are you saying that the snake pictured doesn't have an orange belly? If it doesn't then I guess it could be a Sonora semianulata (ground sanke). Sure looks like a black headed snake though.

Yep, this one has a light cream colored belly, and while it had a vividly black head when I first got it, the head is fading and the bright orange dorsal stripe is starting to appear.

:In any case, you stated that the hurt snake was kinked and very fat. It might have just made a meal of another snake. Ground snakes are documented as eating small snakes and even very small lizards. If it had eaten a snake it would be plump and with a snake crammed into its stomach it could look kinked.
:Good luck with them. Make sure and give them loose soil to burrow in. They love to burrow and it makes them feel more secure. Also they like to hide under flat rocks. They also seem to like a little moisture in some of the soil.

I have them in a ten gallon aquarium, with some flat rocks, water, feeding them crickets and waxworms, no UTH as I figure they are from Arizona, they are used to Arizona temps. The cage they are in is near a window, so the part near the window is warm, the part away is cooler. They have some repti-bark or something in there. Seem pretty happy. Haven't looked at the kinked one in a couple of days to see how he's doing.
