I'm very partial to spotted pythons and Irian Jaya carpet pythons. We have four children, and I've chosen snakes that typically have good personalities and stay at a easily handleable size. You can see & read about some of our collection at www.thereptileshed.com.

For a good introduction to pythons, get a copy of Bartlett & Wagner's "Pythons: A Complete Pet Owner's Manual." It's a good, short single-volume intro with many species accounts and practical captive husbandry advice.
