Hi,

I'm glad to see you researching before you buy. When I am helping guide folks looking for their first snake, I like to make the following point:

If you were looking for a dog, there would be a big difference between looking for a chihuahua and a great dane. When you look at constricting snake (such as boas and pythons), there are small choices and large choices as well.

Here are some small, easily cared for boids: Sand boas, rubber boas, rosy boas, Dumeril's boas, Children's pythons, Spotted pythons, Ball pythons

Now, as to your stated question: the difference between boas and pythons are that boas are liver-bearers, and do not possess the heat pits above their jawline that pythons do.

Things to consider when deciding on a first boid: temperature/humidity differences, space, prey size, arboreal vs terrestrial (or even sub-terrestrial), nocturnal vs diurnal, and definitely only look at captive bred animals!!

I hope this helps, but feel free to post other questions to help you narrow down your choices.
