Well, captivity is not "natural" either. Aspen provides the following:
a) Non-irritating to the animal (usually)
b) Absorbent, which means urates are contained in limited area - easier for the keeper to clean and probably better for the snake to not have urates strewn all over the cage.
c) When the layer is thick enough, helps hold a bit of humidity.
d) Can be burrowed into.
e) Light in weight.
Newspaper is not natural either, yet I know of accounts of 20-something year old snakes kept on newspaper for the most part.
The goal of keeping a snake in captivity is to provide a clean, low-stress environment with the proper temps and humidity for the species. In my opinion, unless the cage is HUGE, a natural-looking cage is just not practical. And anyone who has kept snakes for some time can tell you that the simpler the cage, the more likely you will keep the cage clean.
