The differences are really slight. Pythons are mostly old world and boas new. Pythons lay eggs and boas have live young.

As for a new snake in the boa/python category it really depends on what qualities you are looking for. Spotted Pythons and Rosy Boas are good smaller ones to start with. If you want to go larger then Carpet Pythons, Hogg Island Boas, and Dumeril Boas are good choices. If you can pay the big bucks then Womas are about as good as it gets.
