Shredded paper is ok, it will not hut him at all. Aspen is good also. I see no reason why you should switch back. As long as you clean out the paper as soon as it gets soiled. (this goes for all bedding) He will get used to it then calm down.

Also if your snakes show no signs of sickness I would not worry about them smelling stuff around the cage.
