:maybe this is just me but as far as substrate goes i have a piece of slate held up by a few bricks in water...he has the slate to get out of the water and bask on and the rest of his tank is for swimming...although this is just for my baby gator...hes like 14" long...he seems to like it though...

Im not talking about baby gators being in a tank! im talking about big enclosures like 10 feet X 12 feet and 8 feet X 10 feet. :) There are big difference :) I am way past on keeping it in "Tank" phase because it is smaller for my gator or croc.
