:Mice are a lot more substantial as far as food goes compared to fish. A garter could eat more fish than mice by mass. Mice are just bonier, meatier, and better for a captive garter (it makes their feces less gooey too).

:And yes, they have to be dead or frozen/thawed. Garters don't contrict prey, they just grab it and eat; their natural food are usually things that don't put up much of a fight. IOW, a garter doesn't have the instincts and hunting skills to eat a live mouse.


Garters do have the instincts for taking rodents live....wandering garters have even been known to show some constricting abilities (have had my own do this!!!! This has also been noted in Rossman's book "The Garter Snakes, Evolution and Ecology - on page 169) However, with larger rodents it is best to feed frozen/thawed as they won't be able to bite and injure your snake!
