My large melanistic male seems to prefer a hunt. He eats large earthworms which he wrestles but the meal he seems most enthusiastic about is a 3" shiner minnow. These are quite energetic and are twitching after being swallowed.
I have a young eastern male who only eats by fishing in the bowl, whereas the other snakes prefer fish either in the net or dropped nearby. Very interesting feeding habits.

:And yes, they have to be dead or frozen/thawed. Garters don't contrict prey, they just grab it and eat; their natural food are usually things that don't put up much of a fight. IOW, a garter doesn't have the instincts and hunting skills to eat a live mouse.
