I mixed bed beast, sand, small amount of orchid bark, clean oak leaf litter into a soil, turned loose pill bugs, small native millipeds, red worms, springtail, nightcrawlers & then a few plants. It makes a nice natural substrate and the bugs keep it clean. I add b. beast 1/4" at a time as needed (6mo.'s) to cover dead crickets, and feces, It works great and I keep a smooth green snake, 12 treefrogs, longtail grass lizard and a salamander this way for 2 years now with great results.
