Markc is right... mushrooms thrive in a humid/wet enviroment. The spores seem to be in just about anything organic. They've occasionally popped-up in some of the tanks I've had over the years with no ill effects towards the critters. They'll wither and die in a few days but if the humidity isn't lowered, they'll keep popping up from time to time. I always thought they looked pretty cool.
