:Does anyone know of a good spot in the santa cruz mountains to find some snakes? Around the redwoods and meadows of the UCSC campus I've found a bunch of fence lizards and a few alligator lizards, but no kings gophers or rattlesnakes (which is what I'm really looking for).

:Also, when is the best time of day to go herping at this time of year in the Santa Cruz mountains?

Not too many snakes around the santa cruz mountain area...I've seen a few garter snakes, and sharp tailed snakes around the Felton area (more toward santa cruz off of hwy 9).. Also a couple of garters and a rattlesnake a few years back at walden west (also off of hwy 9, but closer to saratoga). For rattlesnakes and gophers, try mount hamilton area, or somewhere a little dryer...good luck!
