Good place to go herping in santa cruz mountains?

Does anyone know of a good spot in the santa cruz mountains to find some snakes? Around the redwoods and meadows of the UCSC campus I've found a bunch of fence lizards and a few alligator lizards, but no kings gophers or rattlesnakes (which is what I'm really looking for).

Also, when is the best time of day to go herping at this time of year in the Santa Cruz mountains?
