In Virginia the Canebrake Rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus atricaudatus) is highly protected and is our only snake listed as "State Endangered". You may want to contact the Virginia Department of Game & Inland Fisheries (http://www.dgif.state.va.us/) to see if they'll give you contact information for one of the nongame biologists monitoring the snakes.
