Just located this offical notice from the Virginia Fish and Wildlife Information Service:
"Crotalus horridus is no longer separated into subspecies. However, the southeastern population of the timber rattlesnake is considered to be distinct and is often referred to as the canebrake rattlesnake *11609*. Also, since this southeastern population, known as the "canebrake rattlesnake," is listed as state endangered, while the mountainous population ("timber rattlesnake") is not listed, this population, therefore, remains referenced as the "canebrake rattlesnake" in a separate account, though its common name is now formally the timber rattlesnake, the same species as (not subspecies of) that of the mountains of Virginia *"
