In Reply to: roaches breeders, i have a few questions....... posted by herpluver on May 08, 2003 at 18:53:52:
:#1 how many females can 1 male "handle"?
Only the dominant males will breed - for each raised area (e.g. egg carton, rock, limb) one male will establish a territory. All femlaes in that area will breed to that male. More territorities - more breeding males. I'd say five or six are breeding our 100+ females at any time.
:#2 do they lay eggs or birth live babys?
Live birth
:#3 how many babys do they have per pregnancy?
~ 30 ish
:#4 how often to they give birth?
lobsters give birth more often - not sure exact time for hissers.
:#5 do the babys need to stay with there mother or can they be transfered to another tank after being born?
You can transfer the young nymphs, but hissers are great in that they aren't at all cannibalistic - all ages can stay in the same container. Easiest way to do it.
:#6 what do you feed them to gut load them and make them nutritous?
High quality dog food and a wide variety of fruits and veggies.
Be careful - I've developed quite an allergy - a very itchy rash sort of thing on my skin where their feet abrade it - I believe the allergy is to their feces.
We like them - good luck
