Usually they do well as long as you have enough protein in their diet and they're kept well topped up on food and water. Ive bred gerbils for 11 almost 12 years now.. and all my gerbils were kept in pairs all the time.... and they all produced well into their 3rd year without a problem. With nearly back to back litters...though sometimes they'd regulate themselves and have a month or 2 off from having pups.
