Cutting Water bottles

Hey
I am currently using the regular water bottles you buy at pet stores for rodents. I was wondering if i cut the bottom(actually the top when being used) if the bottles would still work. I know/think they work from a gravity system and was wondering if this would cause problem since there wouldn't be a tight vacum seal anymore. The reason i want to do this is because it would make it much easier for me to just refil the bottles without having to remove them from the cages.
