:I just finished my rat cages of sterilite container covered with hardware cloth with wood frame. Is it possible that the rats could push the top off?, do you also make some type of lock or something?. I have been trying to breed the crickets but keep getting mold, this is how i have it set up. two salad containers filled with moist vermiculite and then covered with original top, I then place in a foam fish box that some make incubators out of with heat pad in the foam box.

Depends on the rats but chances are good that one of them will find out that it isn't locked down.
Crix it sounds like you are letting them get too wet. What I do is have a 58 qt tub and a half inch of soiless potting mix that I mist down. I also have a couple of smaller trays (half the tub floor sized) that I fill with half an inch of soil stuff and then stack staggered, so the crix and air can get into each. Every day, once a day I mist it down, but not sopping. I leave the top open. And since they are happy with it being 75-80 I leave them with that and no mold/mildew. Sounds like you are closing it up too much maybe.
