I'm in the habit of mixing up the rat colony on a regular basis as well. Rats are just very social critters, unlike mice. What I learned from this was that if I'm gonna intorduce a completly unkown rat into an established colony I should introduce it into a smaller colony! I could have put her in one of my other two tanks that only had a couple pups in each, but the male I wanted to eventually pair her with was being weaned in that tank and I wanted them to already be familiar.
As it is right now I have the strong temptation to just CO2 that rat, but my husband has talked me into keeping her until I can get her to give me some pups with her genetics (I wanted some blue rats) that I can then foster to some of my better rat moms. Otherwise all the money spent on purchasing her and the loss of all those pups was just a complete waste.
