I'm not too familiar with ALL of the natives in your area and I am away from my references, but I think Great Plains rat snakes and desert kingsnakes are found near you. If you can get a hognose, they are very interesting and you have the advantage with the western varieties in the fact that they eat rodents. Check with the appropriate people before keeping native herps. I know TX just enacted new laws, but I'm sure there shouldn't be any problem in an academic environment.
