Sometimes it's hard to convince youngsters that there is more to herps than boas and pythons. No offense intended to those who admire these giants. I'm not too familiar with ALL of the natives in your area and I am away from my references, but I think Great Plains rat snakes and desert kingsnakes are found near you. If you can get a hognose, they are very interesting and you have the advantage with the western varieties in the fact that they eat rodents. Check with the appropriate people before keeping native herps. I know TX just enacted new laws, but I'm sure there shouldn't be any problem in an academic environment.
