What was the nitrate level?? If that was maxed as well i'd say it's too small water wise- if it was low- i'd say it was lack of bacteria space (lava rock- needed more or something more effecient surface area/volume)
Rick:: I agree, two gallons is kind of small for any animal to be deficating in. I think that the land area should be at least equal to the pond area and the volume of bacteria substrate should likewise be greater or at least equal to the volume water.The goal is to have a trickle effect through much of the substrate and to have the moss wet by soaking up the water not by being submersed. When I have time I think I'll set up a smaller one and do some testing.
