There aren't any venomous snakes in this area that match that description - it's likely a Texas Rat Snake, a large harmless (but generally quite ill-tempered) colubrid that is very common hereabouts. It's bad disposition is probably the cause for your dogs' reticence. Being harmless, I'd suggest just leaving it alone and enjoying seeing it around your property - if you're determined to remove it, you'll have to have someone catch it and take it elsewhere.
