i believe that perlite scratches the bellies of neonate so badly that if they arent taken off of it within a few hours, they scratch their stomachs bad enough to cause bleeding and scarring. I use vermiculite and if you prepare it outdoors, you aren't as worried about the mess. Yes it is very messy but I would rather have a mess than have injured or even dead neonates.
