Actually, as far as 'waterproofing' the wood, I found this product at Lowes. It's a carpet protector. Basically a big roll of self-adhesive, clear acrylic. I'm just going to put a layer of that on the back and bottom of the cage...simple. And I can even replace it if I need to. It's pretty neat stuff.
