I keep mine in a rubbermaid in the living room. As for the ones i release in the cagessimple. They always gravitate to the light so late afternoon or early eveing i just stick a large cup (like the plastic ones you find at fast food places) in and scoop them from the top or sides of cage. As for smell i change regularly and keep the lid on accept for small crack..
