I think they have such large clutches because in the wild the eggs may not hatch, and those that do will get eaten likely. Kind of like sea turtles. But, that is a guess.
In captivity it depends on how well the eggs are cared for. Those with lots of breeding experience tend to have "all the bugs worked out" and can get 100% hatch rates. If something goes wrong with incubation, than 0% can happen.
After the babies are born their suvival also depends on the care given to them. There are a lot of things that can make them die.
Then, of course, there are a few that may die just because they were not born strong enough.
