Well, a couple of simple ideas for you. It will be easier to add a light to a cool tank than cool off a warm one. The cool mist unit will probably be better over time as warm (hot) mist could scald. Just add a light or up the wattage of the basking area. Instead of getting multiple thermometers buy a temp gun (Radio Shack has a nice simple one for about $45, try Pro Exotics for the same idea. I LOVE mine!) or a thermometer with a remote probe. You can measure different areas of the cage with only one by moving the unit around when you want to check something.
