I am NOT any kind of expert here.... just take it as one mans opinion. But seems to me like the main reason people use such small cages is to cram as many snakes as possible into their collection. I agree, you wouldnt want to put a 2 foot mandarin in 4 foot cage with one hide. But if you use the same 4 foot cage and provide many interesting hides wouldn't the snake be better off? Wouldn't the snake be afforded more exercise by doing such???? I am just getting back into snakes after many years away (kids talked me into it) and like I said, I am certainly not an expert. But common sense tells me that a lot of folks cram as many snakes as possible into whatever area they have to use when maybe they shouldn't be keeping that many snakes till they can afford to house them properly. I will probably get a lot of hating over this but that is just how I feel.

:Why would you go to all the trouble of cramming hide places all over a large tank when you do it in a much smaller-scale with a small tank? Small snakes don't NEED big tanks. It IS stressful for them and it is much easier to monitor thier health and temperatures in a smaller tank. I have a juvenile ATB that I housed in a large rubbermaid for a while. It was obviously no doing well.....not eating, I was having trouble keeping the temps and humidity up in the big cage, and it was having trouble shedding. I switched to a smaller cage and all those problems have since vanished. Wait til the snake needs a bigger cage to put it in one.
