Corn Snake as a beginner

I've noticed that the vast majority of you on here have recommended corn snakes as a beginner. You guys also say that they are much more active than some of the other choices that have been given. Does that mean just in their environment, or does it also include handling. Are they calm when handled or do they take on their active nature and try and slither all over the place. I'd like a snake that is relatively calm by nature when it comes to handling. One that won't try and go too far. Now I know all snakes are individuals and you can get cranky ones, etc. I'm just talking about the norm. Thanks
