Can I put any kind of box turtle with my eastern box?

I have a male eastern box turtle in a huge terarium. The rep vet told me that I needed to get another turtle. I have not been able to find a eastern box turtle in my price range. Can I put any kind of box turtle (asian, 3 toed, etc.) with him? Should it be male or female?
