:I have been told that they are many things, from dog/predator bites to hooks used to capture them out of their burrows. I have always wondered exactly what causes them.

Oh, I wasn't trying to say that there was something wrong with him. That one in particular just has a different coloration compared to all the otheres I have. I've got 15 adults. Not sure how many females and males, since I rarely see them all out at once. My 8 two year olds are starting to develp some coloring.
