sorry about typos in previous post. As far as goes the reason for the apparent "attack" i don't think it was a deliberate event in the sense that one turtle intended to intimidate or harm the other. There are lots of turtles out there with missing tails and toes and often this occurred during the act of a frenzied feeding. It is usually presumed that bitten tails and limbs occur when other turtles mistake the body part for a moving food item when the whole area smells like something good to eat.
