HElp, lizard throws sand in water dish

I dont know how, but for the last 3 days i've come home to find my fence lizard has somehow scattered a ton of sand into his water dish, and theres dried water and pieces of sand stuck to the tank. Is this a problem, ive had him for 3 years and hes never done it until now, and now he does it all the time, How is he doin it and how do i get him to stop, im afraid he isnt gettin water to drink. Help,thanks
