If I were you I would think about a Leopard Gecko or possibly a Bearded Dragon. Geckos don't like being handled all the time but they are small (around 12") hardy and easy to keep. Bearded Dragons are bigger and will take more time and money to get a set up for but they are also wonderful lizards. Their diet is about 60% greens and 40% insects. If you are thinking of a snake, although they can get 4ft long Corn Snakes are very docile and easy to care for and will feed well on pre-killed mice. Hope this helps.
