tempered or non?

About to order glass for the bottom and front of my terrarium. Front will be 66"x36" and bottom will be 66x16, both half inch. Tempered glass is waaaaaaaay more expensive and im wondering if i need it tempered if its just gonna hold sand and some decorations. Everyone i call that asks what im gonna use it for tries to say its not safe, but they could be just trying to make money.
