First off, I'd have to disagree with the 10 gallon thing. I'd get him something bigger. Put in a warm and a cool hide. If you don't want to use a UTH, an overhead ceramic heater should do nicely. I try to keep my temps at about 90 on the warm and 78 or so on the cool side. It's a lot easier to provide temp gradients in a larger tank.
How old is the snake? Sounds like he's doing pretty well, if he's eating for you and whatnot.
