Varnish or not to Varnish???

I have found a nice piece of driftwood that I wanted to put in Mors’ enclosure.
My question is should I varnish it or not? The reason for varnish is that wood is porous and I would hate to think that if Mors pooped on it that the juices would penetrate the wood (impossible to clean) making the enclosure unsanitary.

Also, does varnish produce harmful vapours if heated… cuz I hope to have it under the basking light.
