I think you are making a mistake using that type of filter. For one they are not designed to pull water as far as you are making it. It may work now, but you may find that as soon as it starts to get clogged, it will quit all together Plus, how do you keep the intake in the water and not the power unit that is not supposed to be submerged? I think it would have been smarter to go with a submersible like a Fluval 2 or 3, or even a power head that pushes water through a small bucket that has has your filter media (no expensive filter bags to buy) and drains out the bottom.
