::For those that want to do scale counts and such to key the animal out I say "Look at the picture!". I don't like hybrids so I'm a little freaked out by this. Hope it wasn't a "release".
:My opinion is that it is a hybrid. However, I would disagree
:with you on it being scary. There's a big difference between
:the Frankenstein king sort of hybrid that's produced in captivity
:and naturally occurring hybrids which widely occur in many groups
:of animals. I think it's quite exciting and adds another dimension
:to the what's already a fascinating animal. There have been a few
:other reports of suspected alterna X triangulum hybrids and it
:may indeed be a "relatively" common phenomenon. Look at the
:picture of the "celaenops" in Tenant's book. It may have some
:alterna in it as well.

It appears I will be the lone vote of dissension. Maybe I am missing something, but based on the photos, it appears too ambiguous for me to say that it looks like a river road alterna head. I also do not see how someone can make a judgment on size from either photo as well.
Where as I would not rule it out of the hybrid realm of possibility, I do not think this is in fact a hybrid. I agree w/ Joe that this is within the pattern of nops on the river. I have found and seen many photos over the years that show a fairly wide variety of nops on the river and throughout the Bend. I also agree w/ Joe that short of DNA results it will probably not be resolved. It will remain nothing more than an interesting and speculative matter of discussion. I feel the same way about Dave Long's snake as well. Great snakes however. DB
