aspen, for a couple of reasons -

1) easier to clean than paper
2) alterna (and other snake) can burrow into it, and seem to be more calm in aspen.

drawbacks:
1) i don't think most herpers (myself included) keep an aspen-bedded cage quite as clean as a folded-newspaper cage
2) an occassional snake seems to get aspen dust in the tear ducts or nostrils, causing problems
