in 20 years of using aspen ( sometimes ) i have had 3 male snakes draw aspen back inside their hemipen pocket which in turn caused prolapse. One snake had this happen before i evidently even got it but didn't prolapse untill several months later. This snake had not been on aspen during my care. All snakes were adult breeders.

:::Question 1: What do you prefer for the substrate of your cages? Why?
::aspen, for a couple of reasons -
::1) easier to clean than paper
::2) alterna (and other snake) can burrow into it, and seem to be more calm in aspen.
::drawbacks:
::1) i don't think most herpers (myself included) keep an aspen-bedded cage quite as clean as a folded-newspaper cage
::2) an occassional snake seems to get aspen dust in the tear ducts or nostrils, causing problems
