Hi Barbara.
: And, my favor is this: You all seem to be very knowledgeable, but it would be a great help to the rest of if you would also use the common name when you're talking about various species. Thanks
About your favor. . . .
The reason we use scientific names is simply to avoid confusion.
There are multiple common names for an animal.
Example: coon-tail rattler, Texas rattler, Cactus rattler, etc.
The appropriate common name is Western Diamondback.
By calling it Crotalus atrox, everyone in the world is using the same scientific name.
Not every book will contain all of the various common names that may only be known locally.
If there is a specific scientific name that you need to know the common name for, just ask, we will give you one,
if the animal has a common name. Some of the more recently discovered species haven't been given a
common name yet.
