Lethal toxicity, the most frequently reported component of venom toxicity, is determined by a series of injections into lab mice. Other components of venom toxicity include hemorrhagic and proteolytic activity. The proteins which make up the venom are analyzed using gel electrophoresis. The problem with venom toxicology is that until recently there was no standardized way to analyze venom. Also as you alluded to in the canebrake rattler, regional venom variation in populations
are becoming increasingly obvious, i.e. certain populations of canebrakes are much, much more dangerous(toxic) than their timber rattlesnake relatives.
