: Drop for drop, the top three are Oxyuranus microlepidotus (Inland taipan), Pseudonaja textilis (Eastern brown snake) and Oxyuranus scutellatus (Coastal taipan). The inland and coastal taipan, however, both inject considerably more venom than the eastern brown.

I have always wondered how the toxicity of different snake venoms is measured. Can anyone shed some light on the procedures and criteria used to decide whether or not one venom is “hotter” than another?. An example would be timber and canebrake rattlesnakes. The taxonomists have decided that these two are the same species, but I have read that the canebrake is considered the more dangerous of the two. How is this determined?
