My opinion is you can't beat a cottonmouth for a first hot. They are just so easy to maintain. I really feel they are one of the best captives venomous or not. They are very personable I think and really get to know your movements and routines. It's not accurate to say they get to know you but they're really calm down and acclimate like the best of choices really. Some maintain an attitude but they are deserving of their confidence. They are just cool snakes I think. I do think they are fast strikers and will whip around from any angle, not nudge forward like a rattler signalling their strike. You shouldn't judge by the prospect of being bitten but these guys are not that exotic and I would rule out almost any non native as a first hot period. I would put more emphasis on the creatures adaptability to captivity and ease of maintenance for the first timer. They will wet your appetite for bigger and better things but how can you beat these guys as first hot? Some are down right great snakes you can really develop an affection for.
