Quite the contrary! I worry alot about bites from my Aspidelaps! as I do for everyother venomous snake I own! Actually, being that there is no AV availble makes me worry even more!! Though Aspidelaps, especially A.l.infuscatus can be remarkably laid back and placid snakes, pure lubricus and the sp Aspidelaps scutatus can be very bitey and will lunge quite intently on nailing you. Both sp have been known to cause fatal envenomings and both sp venom compisitions seem to be quite varible from one specimen to the next. Bites have been known to cause everything from loclized swelling, all the way up to severe neruological problems!
Also, even at such a small size, Aspidelaps lubricus will rear up, hiss and lunge at you the whole time makeing foward advances! Alot of the time with their little mouths open! Its rare with my specimens but does happen and though I am well equipted to deal with such an occurance, a newbi is going to be startled and maybe alittle unclear on how to deal with such a tude ridden little worm.
Basicly, I suggest Aspidelaps as a good first elapid but not a good first hot. Starting with smaller Crotalids, especially here state side, is the best way to go.

I'm assuming they've just browsed the archives and seen how many hot heads are on here. I just think this is really sad. This forum is designed to be a place to learn, but if people are scared to ask something, there's no point to it.
:Anyway, as to the question, I agree with Al-Ameen. Copperheads and pigmies would probably make good choices, as would coral cobras (though indeed there is no AV made for them yet, but they aren't considered very dangerous so most people don't worry about it). Copperheads are generally placid and laid-back, but that being said, bites certainly have happened. I wouldn't really recommend a venomoid as a first, because of a number of reasons, i.e. surgery could have been botched...you're not always going to get the best idea about a snake by being able to freehandle it if you decide you want to do that, etc. If it's elapids you like, then after you've kept your first few snakes for a while, you might look into the red spitters (N. pallida). These are beutiful snakes and aren't usually considered lethal. Anyway, hope this helped.
